Portfolio Development

July 7 - 25. Mon-Fri, 9 am – 12 pm. $600 + $80 model fee

Instructor: Hollis Dunlap

This 3-week course is for the serious art student considering applying to art colleges.  The class will focus on completion of a portfolio necessary for admission to these colleges.

We will begin by drawing with line, constructing the figure out of simple geometric shapes, paying attention to proportion and logical placement of the figure on the page, the goal is to develop confidence and control over the beginning stages of the drawing.  We will then study the human skeleton to develop a feel for where major bone masses and muscle groups are in order to take advantage of the natural rhythms inherent in the human figure  to add grace and power to a drawing. Examples will be shown and discussed of the works of old masters such as Michelangelo and Caravaggio to demonstrate tasteful use of anatomical knowledge.  Lastly,  we will study the effects of light and how it reveals form, and how to represent 3-dimensional form on the page convincingly. We will work with longer poses (an average of 3 hours) in order to give the student time to make revisions and maximize his/her drawing potential.

Throughout the course, students will have an opportunity to meet with our Admissions Department at Lyme Academy College to discuss the direction of the portfolio from an admissions perspective.

This class is aimed at high school sophomores, juniors and seniors and adults interested in building a strong portfolio for college entrance.

Pre-requisite: Recommendation from art instructor or completion of Fundamentals of Drawing courses.  Please contact the Continuing Studies Department if you have questions about exceptions.

Figure Painting                                                   Instructor: Jerry Weiss
June 2 - 6. Mon-Fri, 9 am-4 pm.
$630 + $65 Model fee - 1 Credit

This workshop is devoted to a traditional and lively study of the human figure. The ''traditional'' approach is concerned not so much with the technique or time spent on a picture, but rather with a concentration on the foundation of good draftsmanship from which solid results will unfold. ''Lively'' refers to both the observation of gesture in the human figure and to the vigorous application of paint.

We will be attentive to composition, simplification of value structure, and the development of color. After considering the composition of the picture, we will study the effect of light on the large masses of the figure, gradually working toward development of the smaller planes of the body. While observation and accurate representation of the figure are taught, we will work from the live model, which calls for a response beyond the rendering of surfaces.

Students will receive instruction appropriate to their levels. There will be a group critique, frequent demonstrations by the instructor, and a slide presentation. Students are advised to begin by drawing, and may work in any media.

Pre-requisite: Understanding of Painting in any medium.

The Portrait                                                          Instructor: Peter Zallinger
August 4 – 8.  Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm.
$630 + $65 Model fee -1 credit

A multi-level course which, through demonstrations and individual instruction, provides the students with a systematic approach to drawing or painting the clothed figure, concentrating first on the head and shoulders. The subject is viewed as sculptural form and portrayed in two dimensions, first as an ordered set of value patterns derived from light reflecting off the model’s various planes. These value patterns are translated and explained further in color as the student proceeds through a sequential process. Resemblance is a natural by-product. Students are encouraged to use a simplified primary palette.

Pre-requisite: Understanding of painting and drawing in any medium

Landscape Painting                                            Instructor: Jerry Weiss
August 4 - 8. Mon-Fri, 9 am – 4 pm.
$630 - 1 credit

In this workshop students will paint at local sites in Old Lyme, paying particular attention to composition, draftsmanship, light conditions, color, and atmosphere. Initially students are encouraged to concentrate on simplification of value and color shapes, the two dimensional patterns of picture construction, and then continue to the resolution of atmospheric perspective and deeper space. Throughout, the study of nature serves as a philosophical touchstone.

The purpose of the workshop is to further one's personal development as an artist by sharpening observational skills, strengthen facility for drawing and painting, and teach a greater understanding of the ideas and craft of landscape painting. We will be more concerned with the intelligent construction of a picture, than with its “completion,” per se.

The class will be devoted primarily to plein-air painting, often traveling to different sites in the morning and afternoon. Students will receive individual instruction as well as group critiques, frequent demonstrations by the instructor, a slide lecture, and a museum visit. In the event of rain, we will also have the use of an indoor studio. While students are encouraged to begin by drawing, all media are welcome.

Pre-requisite: Understanding of Painting in any medium.

Evening Landscape Painting                         Instructor: Michael Viera
August 4 - 8.
Mon - Fri Evenings 5:30 – 8:30 pm

Life Drawing                                                         Instructor:  Peter Zallinger
June 2 - 6. Mon-Fri, 9 am-4 pm.
$630 + $65 Model Fee - 1 credit

The course is concerned with the depiction of the human figure in space based primarily on observation. Anatomical references and constructions will be called upon for identification and to supplement available visual information when that information is inadequate, but the individual model will always be considered the best source of information. The instructor will attempt to illuminate the model to reveal the major forms through plane changes as evidenced by corresponding changes in value. As this is a multi-level course, instruction will be tendered on an individual basis. The class provides the student with a systematic approach to drawing the human figure in space based on the precepts of sound draftsmanship and intelligent spatial organization. Students will be working on short and long poses.

 Pre-requisite: Understanding of drawing

Life  Drawing                                                                 Instructor: Jeremy Davis
August 4 –8. Mon-Fri, 9 am – 4 pm.
$400 +$65 model fee - Non-Credit

This class is designed to help students improve their life drawing skills by learning to “see” with more discrimination. Working from the simple to the complex, students will explore the construction of the figure on the page.  Form and volume are treated equally, along with value and line, to create a fusion of the 2D and 3D construction approaches to drawing.  Basic anatomy will be presented along with geometric forms and perspective to give students' drawings authority and presence.  Beginning to advanced students welcome.  Pre-requisite: Understanding of drawing

SCULPTURE

Figure Sculpture                                                        Instructor:  Randy McIver
May 12 - 21. Mon-Fri, then Mon-Wed, 9 am – 4 pm.
$945 + $100 model fee - 1.5 credit

This workshop will use a model to investigate form. Individual attention is given to each student; therefore all ability levels are welcome. The academic approach of using the model as an objective subject will enhance the students’ knowledge of sculptural design. Special attention is given to anatomy, concepts of volume, proportion, structure, and composition. Students experience comprehensive building blocks and gain a foundation in figurative sculpture that will provide tools necessary for future personal expression.

Pre-requisite: Basic understanding of sculpture

Bas Relief Sculpture                                                Instructor: Bruce Wallace(begins May 29)
Thursday evenings 6 pm – 9 pm for 5 weeks
$350 - Non-credit

In this five week course, students will learn the basic techniques of the ancient art form called bas relief.  It is where drawing and sculpting converge. Bas relief is used most frequently in the creation of coins and medals in addition to architectural adornment. It allows for a wide variety of subjects, not only portraiture and the figure but also architecture, landscapes and still life. Students will work from both photographs and drawings. We will also take a brief look back at the history of bas relief and the various forms it has taken: Alto (high), Mezzo (medium), Basso (low).

(No Prerequisite.)

Portrait Figure Sculpture (changed 4/28/08)                                 Instructor:  Kimberly Monson
August 4 - 8. Mon-Fri, 9 am – 4 pm.
$450 + $65 model fee - Non-credit

Students model in clay from life, at first by analyzing geometry and observing proportions.  By training the eye in this way, the student begins to see and understand 3-dimensional planes, forms, and the construction of the life-sized model.  By concentrating on lessons of figure shape, feature placement, and surface treatment, the student works toward achieving a likeness and character of the model posing.  Throughout the course, students are encouraged and guided in developing their own interpretation of the model.

(No Prerequisite.)
