STUDENT SERVICES–DISABILITES

Housing | Counseling | Student Events | Disabilities

Lyme Academy College is committed to ensuring that all students are given every opportunity to succeed. Any student with a diagnosed disability is encouraged to identify themselves to Student Services. An assessment will take place to determine which accommodations would be appropriate and reasonable, and the student will be given proper paperwork to confidentially identify their needs to their faculty members. Medical documentation within three years will be required. Please direct all questions regarding disabilities to Patti Broedlin, Director of Student Services.

Academic Accommodations Policy

Responsibilities of Student Services:

  • Determining eligibility for participation of students with disabilities in the academic accommodations process based upon a review of appropriate documentation.
  • Determining the appropriate accommodation for each student based on the individuals needs.
  • Responsible for seeing that the student receives the appropriate accommodation
  • Responsible for interacting with the faculty when appropriate.

Responsibilities of the Student:

  • Contacting Student Services at the beginning of each semester so that appropriate accommodations can be made in a timely manner. (Within the first two weeks of each semester.)
  • Providing Student Services with appropriate medical documentation indicating the student's disability and suggested accommodations.
  • Informing the faculty member at the beginning of each semester as to their disability, how their performance may be affected, and what accommodations they will need.
  • Responsible for meeting the timelines and procedural requirements established by Student Services for scheduling exams, requesting assistance, arranging with the faculty member to get an exam to a private space, etc. If the student fails to provide adequate notice of the need for space and/or assistance they are still entitled to the accommodation, but there is no guarantee that it can be provided in the fullest measure.
  • If the student fails to comply with these requirements, he/she will receive a letter reminding them of their responsibilities in order to stress the importance of these requirements.

Responsibilities of the Faculty Member:

  • Responsible for discussing with Student Services any concerns related to the accommodation or arrangements that have been requested by the student in initial contacts at the college.
  • Responsible for determining the conditions at the college under which an exam is to be administered. (i.e., open book, use of notes, formula sheet, calculator, scrap paper, dictionary, etc.)
  • Responsible for assuring that the appropriate accommodations are provided, either by providing it themselves or making arrangements with Student Services.
  • If a student's exam is to be administered by Student Services, the faculty member is responsible for assuring the timely delivery of the exam, along with all necessary instructions and materials for proper administration. The faculty member may also make arrangements with the student for the delivery and return of the exam.
