Folklore in New England

This course is an introduction to folklore studies with a special emphasis on the folklore of New England. It will introduce students to the fundamentals of the study of folklore, including notions of tradition, everyday aesthetics, expressive culture, narrative, material lore, community, performance, and worldview. It will also explore folklore genres such as legend, myth, folktale, ritual, festival, and folk art. It will illustrate these ideas and provide a history of the folklore of New England, including those of immigrant and recent groups to the region.
