Illustrations come to life at Lyme Academy show

At first glance, the work in an exhibit titled “Characters” by three illustrators and Lyme Academy College faculty members appears dramatically different.

David Wenzel’s whimsical, fantastic works in watercolor, acrylic and pen and ink reflect the more than 30 books he has illustrated over his career, including the first and most highly acclaimed graphic novel format of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”

Jon Sideriadis’s exquisitely detailed illustrations in oil and gold leaf represent original myths inspired by classic Greek mythology in a series of books he is currently writing and illustrating titled “Astromythos.”

Dale Stephanos’s bright, bold, large-scale pictures bring illustration into the current, topical realm of characterizing politicians, authors, musicians and other public figures.
