Alan Barkley, Dean of the College,
describes the Senior Project:
"The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Lyme Academy
College is an intensive program of instruction in
drawing, painting, sculpture and liberal arts. Most
students will have taken 60 instructed classes before
graduation.
In their last year, however, seniors are asked to
take one class in which they are free to choose their
own direction, to initiate a body of work that reflects
their interests, passions, skills and knowledge. This
class in the Senior Project.
The Senior Project Team consists of faculty members
representing a cross section of college disciplines
- drawing, painting, sculpture, art history ---
who meet weekly with the seniors to provide constructive
feedback on technical and conceptual matters as they
pursue their independent creative path and begin the
transition from students to independent artists."
In addition to Dean Barkley, the Senior Project Team
includes: Joy M. Pepe, associate
professor, Chair of Liberal Arts, and exhibition curator;
Don Gale, professor, Chair of the
Sculpture Department; Nancy Gladwell,
associate professor, Chair of the Painting Department;
Randy Melick, associate professor,
Chair of the Drawing Department; and Peter
Zallinger, associate professor, Chair of
Post-Baccalaureate program. |

Susanna Coffey (bottom right)
|
| This
exhibition will feature three successful, diverse
women artists - Susanna Coffey, Anne Harris and
Susan Hauptman, all of whom are working within the
field of representational art with the traditional
subject of self-portraiture. This exhibition
is an important statement in a world in which issues
of youth and perfection dominate every aspect of our
daily life. The distinctly different
work of each of these three artists challenges the
viewer to reassess the concept of a woman's self
image and beauty. The glamour that is so much
a part of American culture is not featured in their
work. The human form is accepted as it is.
"Looking at Herself" sees these women artists
working as the painter and the painted - the quest
for knowing personality and identity. This
exhibition presents an exciting opportunity to
reinforce the importance of idea, of representation,
and of the influence of artwork from the past on
paintings that are undoubtedly of our time. |

The 5th Annual Alumni Exhibition

MORE INFO:

|
Last year's
exhibit was an unqualified success and brought together over
58 alumni of the College. This year, we are very
fortunate to have Ms. April Gornik as this exhibition's
first professional juror of selection. This annual
exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see how our
alumni have grown artistically after leaving the College. |

| The most
important resource a college can offer is its
faculty. This is particularly true at the Lyme
Academy, where all the College's studio faculty
members are professional, practicing artists, with
class schedules established to ensure sufficient
time to develop their own work. The ability to
view faculty work is extremely beneficial for
existing and potential students and a testament to
the caliber of the faculty. Please come and
see our new and returning faculty's recent, curated
by Randy Melick, Associate Professor and holder of
the Deane G. Keller Chair in Classical Drawing and
Figurative Art. |

and Ann Holley (BFA, 2004) to receive the Excellence
in Sculpture Award. They have both been
working over the past year to develop a body of work
specifically for this exhibition. Both artists
were also chosen in their senior year to represent
the College at the National Arts Club 28th Annual
Student Exhibition in New York, where they competed
with 50 exhibiting artists from 28 colleges,
universities and other art institutions. |
