Visual Arts Content Component

July 7- July 11 at Lyme Academy College

Three experienced members of the faculty of the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts will teach thirty (30) hours of studio engagement in each of three subject areas: Painting, Observational Drawing, and Sculpture. Teacher participants may choose from among these three courses.

Lyme Academy College emphasizes representational art and the acquisition of observational skills, development of hand and eye coordination, conceptual understanding, and historical contexts relevant to the project.  Syllabi are systematic and sequential and can be adapted to students who bring varying degrees of prior experience.  The live model will be used in part or all of each course.  The teaching method will involve introductory lectures, extensive one-to-one teaching through each day, and concluding group critiques to underscore what has been learned.  Students will reflect upon, describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate their own and others’ work.

Florence Griswold Museum: Art History

The Florence Griswold Museum will help visual arts teachers in the ArtMusica program make use of the professional development and Art History resources of the museum through its current exhibits, online teacher resources, and curricular materials that reinforce the importance of Art History and art appreciation in K-12 arts education. This visit will occur during orientation.

Summer Standards-based Curriculum and Assessment in the Arts Component

July 13-July 18 at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts

This 25-hour institute will enable art teachers to learn to develop or refine arts curriculum to meet the needs of their school systems.  Participants will be guided through a process for creating arts curriculum – from researching exemplary models to developing a finished curriculum that includes quality assessment tools and benchmarked student work.

Teachers will develop quality arts curriculum by analyzing model arts guides from a diversity of school district reference groups such as Simsbury, North Haven, Vernon, and Cheshire. Teachers will review the Connecticut Music and Arts Standards through the lens of the Three Artistic Processes:  Creating, Performing, and Responding.  They will practice writing clear objectives based on the Connecticut Standards with guidance from expert arts curriculum leaders.  Instruction on how to write quality arts assessment will precede teachers’ writing assessments for lessons or curriculum tailored to their own classroom or districts.

Teachers will participate in a protocol to analyze benchmarked student work as a model of how to improve teaching and learning.  Participants will be shown ways to use resources such as the Opportunity to Learn and Ctcurriculum.org to improve instruction.  Small and large group activities will enable teachers to hear from Dr. Scott Shuler, one of the authors of the National Standards, and be mentored by Connecticut arts curriculum experts.
