Music Content Component July 13-July 18
Fairfield University will provide three experienced instructors to teach thirty (30) hours of studio engagement in each of three subject areas: Composition, Vocal Improvisation, and African Drumming. Teacher-students may choose from among these three courses. Fairfield University emphasizes teaching the arts as part of a liberal arts curriculum, with a strong emphasis on rigorous content, as well as teaching it as part of a teacher preparation program. Syllabi are systematic and sequential and the chosen content is readily adaptable to students with varying levels of prior experience. The teaching method will involve introductory lectures; hands-on, in-class work; peer assessment; and time for individual exploration
Summer Standards-based Curriculum and Assessment in the Arts Component July 7- July 11 at Fairfield University
This 25-hour institute will enable art and music teachers to learn to develop or refine arts curriculum to meet the needs of their school systems. Participants will be guided through a process for creating arts curriculum – from researching exemplary models to developing a finished curriculum that includes quality assessment tools and benchmarked student work.
Teachers will participate in a protocol to analyze benchmarked student work as a model of how to improve teaching and learning. Participants will be shown ways to use resources such as the Opportunity to Learn and Ctcurriculum.org to improve instruction. Small and large group activities will enable teachers to hear from Dr. Scott Shuler, one of the authors of the National Standards, and be mentored by Connecticut arts curriculum experts.
