ARTMUSICA is a new opportunity for those teachers seeking to pursue their interests as visual artists or musicians as well as arts educators. It will offer high-quality instruction and foundational learning in standards-based arts education and student assessment.
ARTMUSICA will enroll up to 50 arts teachers who will receive a $1000 stipend to participate.
ARTMUSICA Participating Visual Arts teachers and Music teachers alike will get a full week of content learning in the form of a college course in their field, and a full week of professional development
ARTMUSICA Arts instruction will be given by Lyme Academy College faculty in painting, drawing and sculpture, or Fairfield University faculty in composition, vocal improvisation and African drumming.
ARTMUSICA Dr. Scott Shuler and a team of master arts teachers will present best practices in arts curriculum development and student assessment. |

All ArtMusica Grant Participant Expectations:
Summer 2008 Summer Institute (2 weeks)
Teachers who receive grants will
meet at their site for a total of 10 days between July 7 and July 18,
2008. One week of content learning in music or
visual arts will be offered and one week of Connecticut State
Department of Education led professional development related to
arts standards, curriculum, and student assessment offered at each
campus.
Spring 2008 Orientation Program(s) (one 5-hour day plus preparation time) Additionally, all participants will meet for one 5-hour orientation in Spring 2008. The Orientation Program(s) will bring the 25 visual arts teachers together at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, and bring the 25 music teachers together at Fairfield University to review the year-long program, establish times and dates for follow-up school year activities, introduce program staff, distribute reading assignments and other program content information, and conduct pre-program assessments of teacher participant skills and knowledge. Several hours of the orientation program for visual arts teachers will be spent at the Florence Griswold Museum, providing teachers with information about resources available for arts educators in the Museum.
Follow-up School Year Activities (2 days) All teacher participants will commit to two days of follow-up reinforcement and idea- sharing activities during the 2008-2009 school year. Department of Higher Education Teacher Quality Partnership collaborators will work with the 25 music and 25 visual arts teachers in separate groups for two full days in late fall 2008 and early spring 2009. One day will be devoted to a special learning program in music or the visual arts; a second day will focus on mentoring and follow-up support for teachers on issues related to enriched arts teaching, experiences with student assessment, and the application of the standards. Participants are expected to share their experiences with their school districts by offering workshops on knowledge gained through the ArtMusica program.
Attendance Requirements Stipends of $1000 will be awarded to 50 teacher participants. FULL ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED.
