HOUSING
INFORMATION
Housing for students at Lyme Academy College is a unique system
similar to European schools where students live in a variety of
settings. Many students choose to call listings off of our “Housing
List” where they will end up renting a room in someone’s home.
Others will ask for a copy of the current “Roommate List” so that
they might speak with other students who might want to room together
in a seasonal beach rental. Still others will locate an apartment
over the garage setting. The living situations are as unique as our
students!
Looking for new living space can be an exciting learning
experience. Meeting with homeowners and negotiating agreements
will help prepare students for the many independent choices they
will make as they begin to live on their own. The Lyme Academy
College of Fine Arts offers the following services to assist
students looking for housing:
-
We
offer a GENERAL RESOURCE LIST containing newspaper and
web site information, as well as the names and numbers of local
rental agencies.
-
We
actively seek community residents to offer rooms for rent. We
reserve these opportunities specifically for registered Academy
students, and keep a current HOUSING LIST available in the
student services office for review. Please note that this is a
constantly changing list, with home referrals that are not
researched by the Academy. The student seeking housing will be the
best judge of how appropriate a rental situation is for his or her
needs.
-
We
offer PERSONAL ASSISTANCE when you come to Old Lyme to find
housing. Just call for an appointment with the Director of Student
Services to discuss your ideal housing situation and budget. She
will let you know of different options available to you.
It is
recommended that students become familiar with the market conditions
prior to surveying the area. Exploring the resource list would be a
good place to start. Students might also want to consider questions
that would be helpful to ask, such as, “Are heat and lights
included?” “Do I have access to a washer and dryer?” and “Is this a
non-smoking (smoking) living arrangement?”
If you
are talking with a potential roommate, try to assess how compatible
you will be. Find out a bit about personal habits, such as how late
they typically stay up, if they describe themselves as neat, messy,
or in-between, and if they are study-bugs or party-animals. Talk
about how you can find ways to respect privacy, personal belongings,
and each other.
Please remember that if you are coming
here without a car, finding housing within walking distance can be
challenging. Most opportunities are within a ten minute drive.
There is a bus service available for $2.50 per pre-arranged trip or
$1.25 for taking the bus at regular stops. More information on the
bus can be found at www.estuarytransit.org.
Questions regarding
housing can be addressed by calling 860-434-5232 extension 112 or

LOCAL REAL ESTATE
AGENCIES:
Some
notes regarding using a real estate agency as opposed to using a
classified ad:
-
If
you go through an agency, you must be prepared to bring three months
worth of rent up front – first and last months rent, plus a security
deposit.
-
You
also must be willing to sign a lease, and usually pay $20 per person
for each person signing the lease.
-
If
you are under 18, it may be necessary for a parent to co-sign for
you.
-
You
will fill out an application and be expected to commit to a lease
for either an academic rental (September to May) or year-round.
If you
use the classifieds, the system may or may not require the above
stipulations. Oftentimes things run “month-to-month,” which implies an
informal arrangement where either of you may terminate the arrangement
for any reason.
