Tuition: $400
Studio Fee: $40 Pre-requisite:

Fundamentals
of Drawing: Construction
This ten week course will develop students’ skills in
representing real-life three dimensional forms on paper with
accuracy and efficiency. Students will learn to distinguish
between what the eye truly sees and what the mind thinks it
sees. Students are taught to visualize form as shape, to
observe relative scale and relationships, and to confirm
these observations with measurements. This course
concentrates on the use of line to portray form in space and
a variety of methods will be introduced. This course is
designed for students with little or no drawing experience
and can serve as a preparation course for further study of
drawing. They will become more purposeful in the development
of a drawing, looking at the entire work rather than getting
lost in details. |

Fundamentals of Drawing:
Value Study
This course concentrates on the use of value to portray
form in space and a variety of methods will be introduced.
Students should leave this course with a systematic approach
to the construction of a more accurate drawing and should
have an understanding of how different techniques can be
utilized to enhance that drawing and achieve various
effects. The traditional subject of still life will be used
in the beginning as the class works toward its final
segment, working with the live model. |

Fundamentals of Painting: The
Beginning
This course helps prepare students for College level
courses. In doing so, it helps students gain a sense of
method and purpose in developing a representational
painting. Using traditional subject matter, students begin
with a limited palette and progress to a larger range of
color. This course is designed for all students with limited
or no experience with oil painting. Students who
successfully complete this course will have developed a
reliable approach to painting, breaking more complex imagery
down to manageable components. Students will learn concepts,
color relations, build a core vocabulary, and gain
experience that will enable them to more effectively
understand and incorporate teachers’ comments in future
classes. |

Fundamentals of Sculpture I: Portrait
This course introduces students to the basic figure
sculpture skills. Students will develop an informed
sense of method and logic in translating what one sees into
clay. The course stresses the importance of developing
observational skills which includes viewing an object from
all sides and multiple angles. The course also teaches the
importance of spatial relationships and negative space to
confirm observations.
Students will begin by building appropriate armatures for a
life-sized human skull developed in clay, and progressing to a
life-sized portrait.

Fundamentals of Sculpture II: The Figure
This course stresses the importance of developing
observational skills which includes viewing an object from
all sides and multiple angles. The course also teaches the
importance of spatial relationships and negative space to
confirm observations.
Students will focus on the construction of a scale model of
the human figure in clay, working from a live model. The
course will dfeature demonstrations and much individual
attention, |

Portfolio Development
This three-week course is for the serious art student who
is considering applying to art colleges. The class
will focus on the completion of a portfolio necessary for
acceptance to these colleges.
We will begin by drawing with line, construction the figure
out of simple geometric shapes paying attention to proportion
and logical placement of the figure on the page, the goal is to
develop confidence and control over the beginning stages of the
drawing. We will then study the human skeleton to develop
a feel for where the major bone masses and muscle groups are in
a given pose. This allows the student to take advantage of the
natural rhythms inherent in the human figure and ad grace and
power to a drawing.
Examples of the old masters, such as Michelangelo and
Caravaggio, will be shown and discussed to demonstrate tasteful
use of anatomical knowledge.
Lastly, we will study the effects of light and how it reveals
form and how to represent 3D forms on the page convincingly.
Longer poses of around three hours will be used in order to give
the student time to make revisions and maximize his/her drawing
potential.
The class is aimed at high school sophomores, juniors, and
seniors However, adults interested in building a strong
portfolio for college entrance are also welcome. |

from the simple to the complex, you will explore the
construction of the figure on the page. Form and volume are
treated equally along with value and line to create a fusion
of the 2-D and 3-D construction approaches to drawing. Basic
anatomy will be presented along with geometric forms and
perspective to give your drawings authority and presence.
Beginning to advanced students welcome. |
