OUTSIDE GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS

Financial assistance, including grants and scholarships, is available on national, regional, and local levels. It is our observation that applicants to Lyme with the most aid,  found the majority of their scholarship dollars in their local communities.

Make time to frequent your local and regional libraries. Ask questions, do research, and search their computers and books for local, regional, and state grants and scholarships. Do this early enough (1 year at least) so that you have time to apply for everything you may be eligible for.                  Deadlines “generally” fall between the months of January and May.

  • For high school students, check with your Guidance or Career Counselors. You don’t have to be a pest, but do be persistent.
  • Connecticut Students can check: http://www.ctdhe.org/SFA/default.htm  for more information on CT State Financial Aid.
  • Students from other New England states should contact their Department of Higher Education to find out if they have a reciprocal agreement with CT that allows for their scholarship funds to be sent to a school in Connecticut .
Who might have money to give? Be creative. Think about what makes you different, and find groups that value that difference. Here are some examples of Organizations in your community that you should investigate for scholarship possibilities:
  • State and local governments
  • Businesses
  • Employers
  • Clubs
  • Associations
  • High schools
  • Civic groups
  • Religious organizations
  • Trade associations
  • Labor unions
  • Political parties
  • Military associations
  • Private foundations
  • Private charities
  • Ethnic organizations

The following suggestions will help the application process go smoothly:

  • Keep a financial aid file with photocopies of all forms, including signed copies of tax returns, and a record of fees paid to the College Scholarship Service (CSS). These copies will also provide a useful reference when applying for aid in subsequent years.
  • Check forms for accuracy, completeness, and signatures. Print full name on all forms, tax returns, and documents.
  • Respond promptly to requests for further information.
