COLLECTIONS & RESOURCES

In support of the Academy's curriculum, the librarian and staff collect and organize materials relating to the Fine Arts and General Studies.  Items held in the collections include materials by and about artists, gallery exhibition catalogues, art history overviews, focused art historical studies, materials on sculpture, painting and drawing techniques, and resources for studies in the Humanities, English Literature, Mathematics, Sociology, Psychology and the Sciences.  All subjects collected are in relation to courses offered at the Academy.

The contents of the library collections are listed primarily in two catalogs.  They are our: Online Public Access Catalog and Slide Database (primarily for Faculty in-house use).  Additional printed and online guides are also available to assist users in locating materials in the library. 

The library personnel strive to make all collection materials readily accessible.  Most of our holdings are shelved in areas of the library that are accessible to all patrons.  Select holdings are stored in locked locations and must be retrieved by staff.  Examples of materials currently kept in locked locations are  rare books, reserve-room materials, and CDRoms.  Slides are reserved for faculty instructional use and are kept in the visual resources room.  Only Faculty may check slides out; however, students may also access the slide collection, but only through Faculty supervision.

The library also provides students and Faculty with access to computer  workstations for using library electronic information resources, word-processing, the Internet and email.  A digital camera and lighting units may be used to photograph art, advance reservation suggested.  Additionally, video equipment; LCD, overhead and slide projectors and other slide view equipment, such as light boxes are also made available.  All these AV resources are available for use by request, in accordance to established use rules.  Inquire at the main service desk for details.

LIBRARY SERVICES

The following list of services are available to all current faculty, staff and students to assist our college community with their research and information needs.

• Borrowing Material - Registration is required to borrow materials.  Inquire in library or review posted rules for procedures.  Books and videos from our circulating collection may be borrowed for designated periods. Borrowed materials may be renewed in advance of the due date. 
• Reference Consultation - Individuals who would like help learning how to use the library to find resources for a research project can schedule a one-on-one session with library staff.
• Library Orientation & Bibliographic Instruction - Group-based and one-on-one library instruction is offered both at the beginning and throughout each semester, to those who need to learn the layout of the library and learn how to use the resources and services that are made available by the library. At the request of a faculty member, professional library staff will customize and provide instruction sessions for a specific course focusing on print and electronic resources and research strategies that are appropriate to the given course.
• Library Users Guides - printed bibliographies and guides are provided in the library to inform users of the resources available.
• Computer Instruction - Library staff are available to provide basic instruction in the use of the library workstations, which may be used for word processing and access to the Internet and email.
• Internet Access - Students, faculty and staff may use the library computer workstations to access the Internet for research purposes. 
• Basic Internet Training - Individuals may request a one-on-one session with library staff to learn about the Internet and how to search the WWW.
• Email Setup & Use Instruction - Students who need assistance setting up an email account may ask library staff for guidance and instruction in registering for a "free" email account with one of the mail email service providers.
• Interlibrary Loan & Assistance in locating remote materials - Individuals seeking materials that the Krieble library does not own may be eligible to obtain copies of the material from other remote sources, including other local libraries. Library staff can direct patrons towards alternative access and borrowing options.   Inquire at the library service desk for details.
• Visual Resources & Photography - the library's instructional room may be reserved, as available, by students or faculty for AV and photography equipment use. Inquire at the services desk for details.
• Privileges at other libraries - The library has a formal agreement with the local public library to extend our users' access to resources. All students and faculty may borrow materials at the Old Lyme Public Library by registering with the public library with their LymeAcademy Library ID. 

Library Facility Tour

The library offers quiet reading and study areas, word processing and Internet workstations, copier equipment, photography and slide viewing equipment, as well as open access to the book, video and periodical stacks.  The study tables are outfitted with electrical outlets, (no data ports are available) for those wishing to make limited use of their laptop computers locally.  All Internet and printer access is managed via the library workstations.  Click on the link below to view the online tour of the Krieble Library Facility.
